Market statistics
|
- The self build and renovation market
has grown rapidly over the last 10 years from about 10,000
houses in 1991 to 20,000 by 2000
- The Barlow report on the self build market commissioned
by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation estimated that in 1999
there were 15,000 self build houses which when added to
the estimated 5,000 renovations carried out each year brings
the total to 20,000.
- The self build and renovation market represents 12% of
the new houses built in the UK or one in eight.
- NHBC figures for house completions in 2001 were 139,000
of which 42% were detached houses and bungalows (58,380).
With 15,000 self builds in 2001 this gives a figure of 25%
or 1 in 4 of all new detached houses being self built.
- The UK has still a long way to go to match the level of
self build housing in the rest of Europe. In France 45%
of houses are self built while in Germany the figure is
50%.
- Between £800 and £900 million pa is spent
on building materials and other items used in the construction
of individually built homes or within the renovation market.
- Within the sector over £2
billion of mortgage funds are lent each year.
