Big Green Home Show (Trade) - STAY AHEAD WITH THE GREEN IDEAS
The Government’s target to make all new homes zero-carbon by 2016 has ensured that the eco debate remains high on the agenda within the construction industry. Sustainability, climate change and energy efficiency have been widely reported and debated, making it important to keep up-to-date with the latest eco innovations in order to advise consumers which products will offer the best benefits. In light of this, the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon announces the Big Green Home Show (November 15th -18th), where visitors can learn about the latest technology, products and legislation to help them create a more eco-friendly home.
Self build and renovation experts BuildStore, who opened the unique Self Build & Renovation Centre in February 2007, will examine the reality of sustainable building; looking at planning, costs and most importantly, payback, at the four-day Big Green Home Show, which runs from 15th to 18th November. Expert advice will come in the shape of three Big Green Heroes – the BBC’s Penney Poyzer, TV’s friendliest builder, Tommy Walsh, and the Big Green Giant himself, Dick Strawbridge. There will be special feature presentations from Peter Ainsworth MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Potton Homes and EDF Energy. Visitors can also get the low down on the latest sustainability and energy saving products from leading suppliers, including ICE Energy, Nulock and Hansgrohe.
With a host of features and industry advice to help visitors choose how to live their own green lifestyle, including the latest products, design innovation and lifestyle tips, the Big Green Home Show will demonstrate that a green lifestyle isn’t just about giant compost heaps and composting toilets. As well as the Centre’s eco experts, visitors can hear from people who have built their own eco-homes, consult architects about designing and building ‘green’, tour the Renovation House to learn how to renovate to improve energy efficiency, and talk to leading industry suppliers about the latest materials and products that can help to minimise carbon emissions and reduce energy consumption, and how they can be used effectively in housebuilding and renovating.
Visitors will get an exclusive look at latest technologies and techniques, including product development news and live demonstrations from over 50 of the top industry suppliers, covering ground and air source heat pumps, wind turbines, photovoltaic cells, and water recycling products. The Centre’s Trade Village features over 240 leading suppliers, where visitors can discover the latest products and services on offer, everything from roof tiles and doors, to lighting and home automation. This is an ideal opportunity for leading suppliers to talk to visitors about their designs and projects and get some feedback on the products they need. They can also get advice on financing their eco projects with BuildStore’s unique financial services offering, and can take advantage of exclusive discounts on eco-products and materials from top builders merchant and suppliers with a TradeCard.
Tim Doherty, managing director at BuildStore, explains:
“As expected, the sustainability issue is a key feature of many self build and renovation projects, with our visitors looking for the latest energy-saving ideas, eco friendly materials, techniques and designs for their property projects.”
“Sustainability and eco issues are often approached with trepidation by the industry and consumers alike. There is a lot of confusion about costs, payback and the practicalities of using eco-friendly products and implementing sustainable build methods. With our keynote speakers, seminars and centre experts, the Big Green Home Show can help educate visitors and provide all the answers to unearth the real story on sustainable building,” Tim concludes.
EDF Energy, sponsors of the Big Green Home Show and the National Self Build & Renovation Centre itself, will be providing sustainable energy efficiency advice throughout the Show. Peter Thorn, the company’s Head of Innovation and Partnerships, said:
“The Big Green Home Show has a clear focus on sustainable building and renovating, with energy efficiency a key element. At EDF Energy we are committed to helping customers understand how they can improve their energy efficiency, consider technologies to reduce their energy consumption and so help the environment by using less carbon. The Big Green Home Show will do just that and we’re absolutely delighted to be involved.”
The National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon is the only centre of its kind, providing a totally unique learning environment, where those interested in the design and construction of their own home can learn everything about the process, from finding land to choosing fixtures and fittings, and more importantly, instilling the confidence in customers so they can make their dream project a reality.

Notes to Editors:
BuildStore, the company behind the National Self Build & Renovation Centre, offers an end-to-end service to the self builder and people wanting to renovate or convert an existing property. To capture this rapidly growing market, BuildStore opened the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in February 2007.
The 67,000 sq ft Centre is on a different scale to anything seen before in the UK self build and renovation sector. It has a dual role of helping to educate people interested in self building and renovating and ensuring those involved in projects can have access to all the services and materials they need.
Visitors can learn about the different stages of the self build and renovation process from the “Education Zone”, which features six life-size cut-away exhibits including, plant, groundworks, walls and roof structures. They can also find inspiration inside the Potton show home, and in the “Renovation Zone”, can discover techniques for renovating, with a full-sized house transformed from an ‘old wreck’ to a fully renovated home.
For visitors just starting their self build or renovation journey, the National Self Build & Renovation Centre can help them find a plot of land, renovation or conversion opportunities, with PlotSearch, consider finance options for their project with the in-house finance advice team, or simply get advice from the team of experts.
Those actively involved in the process can take advantage of TradeCard, a unique card which offers discounted prices on building materials and tool hire from leading merchants and suppliers. Plus, over 240 industry suppliers showcase their products and services in a dedicated “Trade Village”, complete with a bar code system, allowing visitors to easily request brochures and further information, which will be sent to them at home.
