Resident expert David Hilton will be accompanied by a group of respected industry experts, to advise you on Eco Design & Planning.

Eco Workshops offer a relaxed and friendly environment where self builders, renovators and home improvers can speak to the experts about eco technologies, sustainability, and low-carbon building issues. Whether you want to get advice on a 1-to-1 basis with an expert or you want to sit in on a few seminars and simply soak up the knowledge, you should find the Eco Workshops extremely informative.

This first Eco Workshop will provide you with the opportunity to discuss the designs and plans you have for your home and hear about what else is possible.

The Experts

David Hilton ExpertAbout David Hilton: David frequently leads seminars, workshops and CPD lectures as well as eco and sustainability training on the self build courses at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon.

He has completed various self builds in South Africa and renovations in the UK and has been involved in designing and installing Solar and heat pump systems since the early 1980s. On the technical side, he is Gassafe registered, an accredited installer of Ground Source and Air Source heat pumps and is currently undertaking an MSc Architecture: Advanced Energy and Environmental Studies .

Tim Fenn ExpertAbout Tim Fenn: Tim is a Director of various companies which include P3Eco Ltd, created to fund and facilitate eco developments throughout the UK; Oakwood Builders & Joinery Ltd, which undertakes eco-refurbishments; and ECO2H2O - which focuses on the design and construction of high thermal mass, timber framed eco houses and recently won the Sustainability Award at the Camden Building Quality Awards 2009 for the eco refurbishment of a Victorian Terrace house.

In his role as Managing Director of Green Carbon Construction, a company formed to build new zero carbon homes and supply eco build projects, Tim has been responsible for building some of the first CSH Level 6 houses in the UK.

Opinder Liddar BA (hons), dip arch, dip arch conservation, RIBA,  LAPD Architects is an established Chartered Architects Practice with a wealth of architectural experience, delivering both residential and commercial projects. Opinder is a member of the RIBA Green Group for the South of England Region and has a particular interest in implementing sustainable elements in all projects. Opinder has over 15 years experience in practice delivering projects with budgets from £20k to £2M and provides advice at every stage of the project, from conception through to completion.

11.00-11.45 From Dreams to Reality David Hilton
David Hilton will speak about the paradigms involved in turning a dream into a real home. Find out who is involved in the process and how it all comes together. With helpful advice on finance and materials acquisition, David also touches on changes in legislation that affect planning permission and building control.
12.30 - 13.15 Bicester Ecotown Tim Fenn
Tim Fenn talks us through the factors behind a project close to his heart - Bicester Ecotown - and explains how the same considerations and ideology can be applied when designing and planning your own eco home.
13.30 - 14.00 Question Time All Experts
Quiz the experts and get answers to all those eco design and planning questions you have.
14.30 - 15.30 Warborough Opinder Liddar
Opinder takes us through a self build project, from the initial design right through to completion. If you're about to embark on the process of designing your own home you'll find this useful, as you pick up useful tips and pointers along the way.
16.00 - 16.30 Eco Payback David Hilton
How long will it take for the various technologies to see 'payback'? David looks at this interesting topic not only from a financial angle, but in terms of carbon as well.

Permanent Exhibits

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre has been built on a scale previously unseen in the UK. Here you can walk through exhibits that explain - in exploded detail - every step of the self build and renovation processes.

Wolseley Building

New!

The Wolseley Building has four key zones; the Wolseley Theatre, a Bathstore Showroom, a Moores Kitchen Showroom and a builders merchant branch area where visitors can place orders! The house has numerous different products installed for visitors to see in situ; many of these are 'eco' products such as LED lighting, sun scoops, thermowood timber cladding, sheepswool insulation and others.

Educational Journey

A fully guided audio tour taking you round a fantastic selection of life-sized exhibits, featuring cutaways of groundworks, foundations, walls, roofs and more. If you're considering self building then don't miss this!

Renovation House

Take a walk through the front doors of this full-size renovation project and see the house come to life before your eyes. The audio guide explains every step of the process to give you a deeper understanding of what a renovation project entails.
