Go Green in the Burden’s Environmental Big Green Pavilion

NEW at the show this time around was the Burdens Environmental Big Green Pavilion – Helping you to find out how to make your home and life more efficient whilst saving on money.
Visitors saw live demonstrations and got expert advice on cutting edge eco construction techniques, building materials, energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technology. Plus they got a chance to meet suppliers of innovative and unique eco products and attend daily seminars to hear stimulating presentations and debate on key eco issues. The eco experts were there to talk about realistic lifestyle techniques that help to reduce consumption, save energy and make sustainable living.
SEMINARS
Daily seminars showcasing eco solutions in the Green Theatre and hear stimulating presentation and debate on key eco issues
9.30 - Challenging current behaviour in how we select paints and maintenance products
Seminar on a range of products to maintain a healthy and sustainable home without reliance on harmful chemical cleaning and maintenance products.
11.00 - Air Source Heating & Solar Energy
With rising environmental concerns, reduced availability of natural fuel supplies resulting in increased utility bills, renewable energy has never been so attractive. Two of the most cost effective options currently available to those interested in both new build and renovation are solar thermal and air source heat exchange systems.
13.00 Permeable paving and the latest legislation for paved driveways and gardens
The increased number of paved paths and driveways in urban areas has led to an unmanageable volume of surface water run-off into mains drainage systems. As of October 2008 new legislation for England and Wales may require planning permission for new non-porous driveways. Permeable paving is one of the options that you can take to help avoid planning permission. Porous driveways mimic natural drainage systems, so helping to sustain the natural environment.
15:00 - Low carbon buildings – the facts
Minimise your carbon footprint throughout the life cycle of the building. An informative seminar covering a broad range of subjects to help you create a healthy and sustainable dwelling from design, through construction and maintenance
DEMONSTATIONS
Sponsored by the Burden Group, the Big Green Pavilion showcased a range of traditional and cutting edge eco-solutions for your home. Burden’s helped visitors cut through the green wash and discover what’s really available at both ends of the spectrum, from traditional building techniques and all natural building products through to high tech, cutting edge materials.
10.20 & 14.15 Thermoplan Clay Block Walling
Aa live demonstration to see this single skin clay block building system put through its paces alongside traditional walling materials.
12.00 - Healthy Homes with Eco Paint
A demonstration of this environmentally friendly paint…no fumes, no solvents, no toxins, no tins. Did you know that paint solvents are the second biggest man made cause of climate changing emissions?
16.00 - Environmentally Friendly Bacterial Cleaning
Demonstration on the benefits of natural Fragile Earth eco-friendly and bacterial cleaning – less waste, less pollution, cost effective, working with nature.

Green Roof & Living Wall Systems - Aldingbourne Nurseries
For every roof there are four walls and on a large building this can be a considerably bigger surface area than the roof. Green walls have a number of advantages, the principle one being a reduction of thermal loading on the building
fabric; others include heat island reduction (in urban situations), stormwater attenuation, noise reduction, ecological enhancement, air purification and the psychological well being of urban residents. Aldingbourne offer a unique green roof and living wall system which provide a real solution to all clients who are trying to make a difference for future generations.
Waste Converters - Bioplex
There are new economic and environmentally viable treatments to convert wastes containing organic material into a fermented and composted solid product which can be used as organic fertiliser.

Sustainable Drainage Systems - SustaHanson Formpave
The Formpave sustainable urban drainage system allows heavy rain to infiltrate through a permeable concrete block paved surface into a unique sub-base before being released in a controlled manner into sewers or water courses. Discharge rates in accordance with greenfield run-off can be readily achieved if required. Alternatively, if the underlying sub-grade is suitable the water can be infiltrated directly into the sub-grade. The water leaving the Formpave Aquaflow system is cleaned by filtration and microbial action and can be used for secondary non-potable uses such as flushing toilets and watering soft landscaping.
