£181 spent on dodgy trades people in UK each year

If you aren''t particularly enthusiastic about DIY and would prefer to get someone else in then the advice is to be careful because cowboy trades people cost UK home owners £181 million every year, according to a new report.

Direct Line, a home insurance provider, has found that each year over a million Brits have to shell out for repair jobs after unqualified plumbers, builders and electricians do a botched job.

One in six homeowners says this has happened to them in the last two years.

Andrew Lowe, from Direct Line, said: "Homeowners shouldn''t have to shell out twice for the same job.

"We would strongly advise them to ask for ID and qualifications or to consider one of a number of services that have qualified engineers on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year."

This is very important if you are among the third of all homeowners who fail to ask for proof of identity and credentials before hiring a handy person.
