81 per cent of young people aim to own property by 30

Research released by insurance company Alliance & Leicester has shown that many ambitious UK youngsters expect to own property by the age of 30.

Over 80 per cent of 16to 21 year olds surveyed expect to own property by the time they are 30, a further 32 per cent expecting to be debt free by the age of 35

And almost a quarter (24 per cent) think they will earn £40,000, close to double the national average, in ten years time.

Yet figures show that the average graduate is currently expected to have debts of about £20,000, not an easy figure to pay off.

More than a quarter of those who avoided higher education are currently debt free, and so are better positioned to achieve these goals early.

43 per cent of young people surveyed said the main reason for them not to go to university was the amount of debt they would incur during their time there.
