A house to be proud of

A family in Lewes has won a cash reward for their outstanding self-built house.

Norwich and Peterborough Building Society gave the Curtis family £5,000 for their environmentally-friendly townhouse which cost £240,000 to build.

It extends over four storeys and has five bedrooms with the land costing £60,000. The good news though is that the home has already been valued at a whopping £900,000, proving that self-builds really do pay off.

"We''ve created an environmentally-friendly, and fun, living space on a brownfield site using local labour and materials," Aaron Curtis told the Thrifty Scot.

"This home suits the needs of our family and we hope it will be an inspiration to others."

They built the property next to a partially demolished viaduct near a major railway line to Lewes which ensures good transport links plus road access.

Some 20,000 Brits self-build every year and Norwich and Peterborough Building Society have offered the cash prize to the most environmentally-friendly property every year since 1998.
