An extension is the best way to increase a home

A recent survey among members of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has revealed an extension is the best way to try and increase the value of a property.

Over 40 per cent of NAEA members agreed that an extension is the best way to pump up the price of a property, followed by a new kitchen with 17 per cent of the votes.

Homeowners wanting to improve their existing homes should stay away from upgrading the exterior of a house or creating a conservatory or glass extension, the survey said.

Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA, stated a "well planned and built extension, that creates an additional open living space, could potentially increase the value of a property".

Less than ten per cent of NAEA members said that a loft conversion was the most effective method while 15 per cent said the addition of off-road parking would bump up the value of an existing property the best.

According to fool.co.uk, an extension could add £13,568 to the value of a typical home.
