Anyone can self-build, says expert

An expert on self-building has said it is something that anybody can do.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Kevin McCloud, presenter of the TV show Grand Designs, denied the notion that the idea of self build was just an indulgence for the middle-classes.

He commented: "Building your own home is about desire, fantasy. But it's achievable, anyone can do it."

The paper notes that the Self Build Alliance recorded 35,000 homes being built in this way in the UK last year.

Mr McCloud went on to advocate a series of ways in which people could self-build their homes with high eco-friendly standards, suggesting these include items such as sheep's wool insulation, lime rendering and ground source heat pumps.

As well as cutting energy bills, such homes could be worth extra if and when they are sold on, new research has indicated.

Last week the Green Building press reported that a survey by DIY store B&Q established that eight out of ten Britons would be willing to pay extra for an energy efficient home.
