Arun council in eco-town pledge

Arun council in West Sussex has said it is considering holding its own enquiry into the plans to site one of the government's eco towns in the district.

The site, near Littlehampton, is one of the 15 candidate locations but has faced criticism from the council, which believes the development will go against its own planning policy.

Ricky Bower, the council's cabinet member for housing and planning, told Property Week: "I feel absolutely no sense of reassurance that we will be listened to as a planning authority."

He said that the government had "completely ignored" the council's views on the matter and were preparing to over-ride any objections.

Such a move could reduce the chances of more eco-homes being built in West Sussex.

However, those wishing to live in such a home could seek to build their own.

Another location where eco-town proposals are under fire is Cambridgeshire.

Plans to create such a town between the villages of Pampisford and Great Abingdon have been condemned by local councillor Tim Stone, who has said the local infrastructure "can't possibly cope with it", reports the Haverhill Echo.
