Avoid a bodge job during DIY

Bank holiday bodging is one experience that DIY enthusiasts should be avoiding this weekend especially in the Midlands where more bodged home improvements occur than anywhere else.
A survey by Halifax Home Insurance shows that 4.1 million British households spend about £670 million trying to sort out DIY jobs which have gone wrong and the Midlands seems to be a problem hotspot with £272 million spent there alone.
Some 11 million households are planning some sort of revamp and each will spend on average £13,800 so its very important to hire a tradesperson if you are not qualified enough to carry out work.
Vicky Emmott, from Halifax, said: "Whilst well planned and executed home improvements can add significant value to a home, getting it wrong can be a disaster.
"Trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance and leave you liable for the cost of any subsequent damage."
Scots are the champions of the DIY world spending only £4.6 million on repairing mistakes.
