Bad colour schemes cost home value

You may risk devaluing your property if you plump for the wrong colour scheme when redecorating it, according to a new report.

Research from Privilege Home Insurance has found that bad colour schemes can lose between £1,000 and £3,000 from the going price of a property.

Many home owners must be falling into this trap because only 37 per cent of Brits paint their homes magnolia which is the recommended colour of choice from estate agents.

Andrea Mountford, an interior designer, said: "Not only do we all carry conscious, personal colour preferences, colour also evokes an unconscious response in us all.

"You risk turning off potential purchasers through the colours you choose in your home."

She explained that magnolia is popular because it makes spaces appear bigger and cleaner as opposed to red and orange colour schemes.

However only 37 per cent of UK home owners chose magnolia for their homes despite estate agents recommending it, according to Privilege''s report.
