Beware cowboy asbestos removal firms
If you have made the decision to have asbestos removed from your home renovation project, then make sure you don't use cowboy removers.
People should beware unsavoury characters charging extortionate fees, according to experts from the Asbestos Information Centre. People's ignorance and fear of the building material often leaves them vulnerable to being charged massive amounts for shoddy work.
"Because there's nothing but scare stories [in the press], people hear the word asbestos and panic," said Mr Hutchinson from the Asbestos Information Centre.
"I've had conversations here with people whose grans have had people go in and charge them £10,000 for a job which I know would be at most £1,000," he added.
He said that the solution to this problem is a greater public education that asbestos does not automatically cause any problems and it can be safely managed without expensive removals.
The information centre says that asbestos products, unless broken, do not need to be removed.
