Birmingham looks for housing blueprint

The City of Birmingham has announced a competition to design the ideal home that will become the archetype for future housing development there.
Speaking at the MIPIM property event in Cannes, council leader Mike Whitby said there will be a contest this year to design the ideal home for the future of the city.
It will be constructed from local materials, be eco friendly and be located in the city centre, he added, with the design then copied for new housing developments in the future in various parts of Birmingham.
Speaking of the need to ensure urban areas play their part in combating climate change, Mr Whitby commented: "For ambitious international cities such as Birmingham this challenge is all the more pressing, set against a growing economy and ever developing cityscape."
Birmingham residents looking to self build their own homes may find their own solutions to the need to construct eco-friendly homes.
The city of Birmingham is the largest local authority in the UK, with a population of just over one million.
