Bright future predicted for self builders

Savvy consumers could buck the trend of a slowing housing market in the UK by opting for self building, it has been suggested.
Self build and renovation specialist BuildStore has claimed that consumers could avoid the current troubles in the housing market by ensuring their home "costs considerably less to buy than its estimated final value".
It suggests self builders and renovators could make between 25 and 35 per cent or more profit by building from scratch or doing up a property.
Those in the south-west are ideally placed to do this, as BuildStore's land database highlights "plentiful" opportunities and bargains in this region.
A total of 844 potential new or revamped properties are listed across the south-west, with Cornwall boasting 178 such building opportunities.
In Cornwall, plot prices start from £55,000, according to BuildStore, with Hampshire where 126 building opportunities are available offering plots from £40,000.
"For homebuyers seeking some good news in a property market beset with doom and gloom, self building from scratch or renovating might be the answer," BuildStore suggests.
Self building in the south-west could lead to "enormous savings", according to Warren Bright, chief executive of propertyfinder.com.
