Britons keen to eco self-build

Eight in ten Britons say they would incorporate environmentally-friendly features into their property were they to embark upon a self-build project.
The study, commissioned by the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society to mark the launch of its annual eco self-build competition, also found that almost half of the remaining 19 per cent said they would not add such features because of the cost involved.
The government's zero-carbon targets met with even greater approval, with 89 per cent of respondents saying they agreed with the aim of making all new homes carbon neutral by 2016.
"We'd really like to see more being done to encourage individuals to make changes to existing housing [
] such as removing VAT on energy-efficient home improvements, or reducing council tax for properties with a high energy-efficiency rating," said Richard Lloyd, one of the judges of this year's competition.
"We hope that the winner of this year's eco self-build competition will inspire others to improve their own homes," Mr Lloyd added.
One in five Britons would like to build their own home, according to a study conducted last year by Legal and General.
