Britons look for new builds in the country

Britons' ideal home would be a new build property situated in the countryside, a new study shows, with a three-bedroom home the typical size of the residence.

The research from Halifax mortgages showed that 22 per cent of respondents to the study would prefer a new build property, with 30 per cent saying that the countryside was their location of choice.

Homeowners are also concerned about the environmental impact of their properties, the research revealed. Two thirds said that eco-friendly features were important, with scope for energy-saving also high on the agenda for over half of those questioned.

"Although many of us live in towns or cities, there is no disputing that a house in the country is what the majority of us aspire to," commented Halifax head of mortgages Phil Jenks.

"The preference for new build detached properties shows that people want their home to be personal to them and that space and privacy is also important," Mr Jenks added.

Earlier this year Gordon Brown pledged that every new home built in the UK would be a zero-carbon home within ten years.
