Britons still in love with gardens

More than three quarters of all Britons say they would be prepared to pay a premium for a property with a garden, according to new research.

A study from Halifax Estate Agents has found that 78 per cent of respondents said they would pay extra for such a feature, with most prepared to pay £10,000 on average.

And five per cent even said they would be prepared to pay an extra £30,000 for the privilege, though this willingness increased with age.

"Our research shows that many of us will pay a premium for a property with a garden. Making the most of your home's outside space could add real value and maximise any sale price," outlined Colin Kemp, managing director at Halifax Estate Agents.

Research by Rated Tradesmen published last month found that the average estate agent believes that around 4.5 per cent of a property's true value can be wiped off if a garden is sufficiently untidy, with three per cent of the value of the entire street following suit.
