Brits 'not adding optimum value to homes'

The top three home conversion projects which Britons believe will add value to their homes are not the same as the ones which estate agents recommend, according to a new report.

A survey by GE Money Home Lending has found that most Brits believe that kitchens, bathrooms and redecoration are the big winners in upping the value of a property, with a combination of all three adding about £18,000 to a home's price.

However estate agents say that loft conversions and extensions are the big money spinners because together they can add £42,000 to a home's value.

"Homeowners planning improvements to their homes this summer to specifically increase the value of their property could be missing out on the most valuable additions," said Giacomo Gigantiello from the firm.

He added that at a time of year when many are planning to improve the value and desirability of their homes, it is important that consumers appreciate and establish DIY and renovation tasks which will add the most equity to their particular home.
