Brits rush for the paint brush

Latest paint sales in the UK are looking up which indicates a potential resurgence of interest in DIY and home improvements.

Market analysts GFK have found that emulsion sales have gone up by 1.4 per cent between 2005 and 2006 while base paint sales for colour mixing also increased in sales by three per cent.

GFK''s report showed that there have only been sales declines in very specific types of paint such as trim paint.

"But the decline is primarily through gloss paints. Satin trim paints, and in particular satinwood trim paint, displayed strong growth year-on-year at five per cent," it added.

Sprayer technology is catching on with brush sales going down as people turn to spraying on their paint and tiles have also proved especially popular during 2006.

The two areas which have most suffered a downturn are wall coverings and coving but the report stipulates this may just be a short-term trend owing to sudden changes in fashion.
