Gordon Brown is set to publish a housing green paper outlining his plan to tackle problems surrounding the supply of homes, it has been revealed.

Inside Housing has reported that the paper will be published by communities secretary Hazel Blears by the end of the month, with plans though to be in place for extra investment in council houses.

Industry analysts hope that the new cabinet will be able to provide a fresh approach to the ongoing problems.

"If there's going to be an increase in the spending review, which we expect, we need to get ourselves geared up for that now and make sure that there’s a supply of land coming though with the appropriate planning permission on it," commented Chartered Institute of Housing deputy chief executive Sarah Webb, according to Inside Housing.

"It has got to be more than a statement of intent, which we have had up until now," Ms Webb added.

Prime Minister Brown has made a point of bringing up housing issues in recent weeks, with new chancellor Alistair Darling also asserting the importance of the sector.
