Brownfield land strategy progressing well

English Partnerships has reaffirmed its commitment to the government's policy of using brownfield land for housing development, saying that such initiatives are "crucial" to the future supply of housing.

The regeneration agency said that it was continuing to work with the Department for Communities and Local Government in developing a National Brownfield Strategy and making recommendations that ended up the government's recent green paper on housing.

Developers have reacted well to the government's advocacy of such developments, the agency added.

"There was a considerable reluctance in the past for developers, ten, twelve, fifteen years ago, to reuse land," advised Paul Syms, national brownfield advisor for English Partnerships' National Brownfield Strategy.

"[Developers] have been much better at reusing land over the last decade and it's partly due to market conditions.

"We are working to assist local authorities…we conduct annual surveys of brownfield sites and we're looking to help local authorities get a better understanding of the issues that act to impede development."
