Brownfield skills review unveiled

English Partnerships and the Academy for Sustainable Communities (ASC) have announced the launch of the first ever review of the skills needed to re-use brownfield land.
With the government aiming to build 60 per cent of its planned three million new homes on brownfield land, the review aims to boost the number of accredited brownfield professionals in an effort to help meet that target.
Once the extent of the skills gap is ascertained and practices for improvements put in place, the resultant National Brownfield Skills Strategy will be published early next year.
"The successful reuse of land is not just about physical transformation but also the environmental, social and economic aspects of creating places," commented ASC director of learning and skills Trudy Birtwell.
"For this to be successful, we not only need to ensure an adequate supply of brownfield professionals in the future, but also build where we can on the skills base of existing practitioners," Ms Birtwell added.
Last month a bill in parliament called for gardens to no longer be included in the definition of brownfield land in order to stop ad-hoc developments from taking place.
