Brown's eco-town pledge welcomed by experts

Yesterday the Prime Minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown called for 200,000 new zero-carbon homes to be built and experts are welcoming this news.

The Home Builders Federation, which represents private sector builders throughout England and Wales, says that these new homes will be 'great' in tackling the UK's housing shortage.

A spokesperson from the federation said that the zero-carbon homebuilding agenda is something that the property industry cannot shy away from and it is 'very much here to stay' although it does make construction a little more difficult.

"In terms of dealing with emissions from homes, we need to take into account the existing stock as well," warned the spokesperson.

"New homes are only going to account for one per cent of the total housing stock each year, so 99 per cent of homes in the country are there already obviously it makes sense to target them."

He added that more information is needed from Mr Brown so it can be properly analysed.
