Budget date announced

The treasury has announced that chancellor of the exchequer Alistair Darling will deliver his first budget on March 12th 2008.

It will offer a chance for Mr Darling to make changes to taxes affecting housing, such as stamp duty.

More green taxes may be introduced, including ones to encourage more eco-friendly house building.

If such measures are brought in, this may give new incentives to those planning to build their own homes to make them as green as possible.

The likelihood of new green taxes may be increased by calls for the government to raise the overall amount of revenue it brings in by £8 billion.

A call to raise that much extra tax has come from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which has said the additional income will be required to ensure the government meets its borrowing targets as a slowing economy reduces corporate tax revenues.
