Builder acknowledges self build demand

A representative of the Home Builder's Federation (HBF) has acknowledged that there is a large-scale demand for self build in the UK.

The HBF spokesperson said: "Clearly there is a market in the UK for self-build homes - as demonstrated by the fact there are an estimated 20,000 built per year."

Seeking to suggest that it was better for people to let established building firms construct their homes, the spokesman claimed that self build was only the best way forward for a "limited percentage of the market".

He argued this on the basis that most people would still need the help of experts such as plumbers, electricians and plasterers.

However, centres such as the National Self Build and Renovation Centre in Swindon provide access to such services, with the centre having a trade referral desk enabling self builders to find such experts.

Among recent developments in self build is the Argos Helsinki, a flat-pack home which costs £10,999.999.
