Buxton building levels surpass targets

The number of houses being built in Buxton, Derbyshire has increased to such an extent that building targets in danger of being missed a few months ago could now be surpassed, it has been revealed.

The Buxton Advertiser has reported that calls have now been made for a potential oversupply to be addressed.

A record 280 homes were built in the area during 2006 and 2007 thus far, the council has reported.

"I feel it is very important that the public in Buxton realise that a housing moratorium should be introduced or else they will end up with an oversupply," advised independent councillor Ivan Bell, according to the newspaper.

We are pleased they are not allocating any more sites because that would have meant using greenfield sites but maybe this could have been foreseen. I think the housing market in Buxton is more buoyant than maybe they anticipated," advised John King, planning officer for the Friends of the Peak District organisation.

The government plans to build 190,000 homes a year in order to compensate for housing shortfalls around the country, it was advised recently.
