Call for more eco-building

Environmentalist group Friends of the Earth has called on the government to press ahead with building more eco homes after the announcement of the eco town site shortlist last week.

Spokesman Paul De Zylva said the towns could be an "inspiring blueprint" for the future, but added that they represented a "drop in the ocean" compared to the government's overall plans for new homes.

"All new homes must be built to the highest green standards", he argued.

Mr De Zylva added that he believed the drive to build greener homes should not see the improvement of energy efficiency in existing houses neglected, calling for action to make it "easier and cheaper" to make such homes greener.

Those wanting to live in an eco home may look to use the self build method to do so, while extensive renovation may help make an existing house more environmentally friendly.

On Friday the Carbon Trust advertised for those living in Brighton with ideal examples of eco homes to put themselves forward to let the public view them during two weekends in midsummer.

The scheme, known as Eco Open Houses, is designed to offer real-life demonstrations of best practice in action, the trust has stated.
