Call for more key worker accommodation in St Albans

There needs to be increased building of affordable homes for key workers on the town of St Albans, a local parliamentary candidate has said.

Roma Mills, who will contest the constituency for Labour at the next general election, told the St Albans Observer a new report from Halifax showing that prices rose in the city by an average of 16 per cent over 2007 to £359,595 showed "just how hard it has become to get on the property ladder in St Albans and surrounding villages".

She added that it would become "increasingly difficult" to attract key workers such as teachers and health service staff, concluding: "There is an urgent need for local councils to get behind the drive to provide more affordable houses."

The figures for St Albans from Halifax were slightly higher than those provided by Nationwide last week, which stated that the average house price was now £347,563, a rise of 13 per cent over the course of last year.
