Cambridge greenbelt in danger

Cambridge needs so many new homes that greenbelt land may have to be destroyed to accommodate them, according to planners.

During the next 15 years some 73,000 extra homes will need to be built in Cambridgeshire, according to the government, but planners have scoured all available land and are worried about such proposals.

Cambridge should see 4,300 new homes according to the government.

They say developments are already taking place all around Cambridge and that developers should not be given a free reign to build thousands of new homes.

Ian Nimmo-Smith, a councillor on Cambridge City Council, said: "Developers have been knocking on our door ever since the panel reported. It''s going to open up proposals to revisit the greenbelt. We don''t believe there are additional brown field sites.

"We don''t believe we can accommodate anything like that number without totally transforming the character of the city and breaching the vision of the Local Plan. We will be challenging the figures."
