Carbon neutral conversions 'cost £9,000'

A new study from Alliance & Leicester has revealed that making a home carbon neutral can cost more than £9,000.
The firm's research has found that adding improvements such as solar panels, improved boiler systems, insulation and other energy-efficient measures to a typical three-bedroom property costs £9,270 in upfront costs.
But the study has also suggested that such improvements would pay for themselves in the long-run.
"Becoming carbon neutral will not happen overnight. There are lots of diverse ways homeowners can try and make their homes greener but it all depends on how much people want to spend," noted Alliance & Leicester senior personal loans manager Richard Al-Dabbagh.
The government's intention of making all new homes carbon neutral by 2016 should focus on the use of on-site renewables rather than relying on offsetting methods, it was recommended earlier this week.
However, in an apparent u-turn the government has now given the go-ahead for a review of off-site renewable energy sources in relation to its zero-carbon target.
