Cash boost for south-east

The South East England Regional Assemble is to invest £384 million into the area''s sub-standard housing between April and May of this year.

There are roughly 10,000 cases of poor accommodation in the region with one in ten privately owned or rented homes in the city falling below the government''s standard of decency.

Now another lump sum will be invested into housing with Brighton and Hove Council set to receive the biggest benefits with the largest share of the Assembly''s money being given to the coastal area.

Regeneration of UK cities is high on the government''s agenda.

Yesterday it was announced that a new government agency called Communities England would merge the former work down by regeneration agency English Partnerships and the Department for Communities and Local Government.

By 2009, this new agency will be revamping British housing and regenerating urban areas once an important review into the nation''s housing is completed by Professor Martin Cave of Warwick University.
