Cavity wall insulation more efficient than double glazing, expert claims

Homeowners should consider cavity wall insulation rather than installing new double glazing windows, an energy efficiency specialist has claimed.

Specialist Mike Malina stated that it would not be a sensible idea for people to install double glazing if their current windows were in a good condition and there are more efficient ways to save energy and money.

Mr Malina suggested that cavity wall insulation, draft stripping and thermostatic radiator valves would all provide a better financial return and should be considered before double glazing.

The specialist added that there was a myth surrounding the need for investment in such improvements and that it is purely a "cosmetic thing".

In June, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors' Building Cost Information Service reported that the average cost of installing double glazing had climbed 22 per cent since 2006 from between £850 and £1,580 to somewhere in the region of £1,040 and £1,930.

Figures from the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes have indicated that the amount of heat lost in properties through roofs and walls is enough to heat over two million properties for a whole year.
