One more thing to check before embarking on that pet DIY project of yours is whether you are covered by your home insurance policy for any mishaps to your person, according to one insurance firm.

Churchill has researched accidents occurring during home improvement endeavours and found that some £2.6 billion worth of accidents happen every year to unlucky or clumsy Brits.

Martin Scott, from the firm, said: "Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home."

One fifth of British households have made such a claim after damaging their property or themselves while one in ten Brits even have the misfortune to have to claim twice per year.

The average home insurance claim for accidental damage costs £540 and a lot of these accidents are happening, bizarrely, to people''s eyes with 20,000 eye accidents happening due to DIY every year in the UK.
