'Choose your own neighbourhood' with a self build

Published: 27/11/2008

A new survey has revealed that 24 per cent of people in the UK want to sell their home and move somewhere else.

Brits that choose to embark on a self build project have the opportunity to pick a plot in an area that fits their requirements and build a home to their taste.

The poll by home insurer LV= found that an ideal neighbourhood is one where someone "can live a quiet life free from the threat of crime and anti-social behaviour".

When asked what they would change about their current neighbourhoods, the most popular response was the level of council tax they must pay, with four out of ten saying that this is the biggest issue for them.

Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding.co.uk, has claimed that in the past a lack of plots may have held back the self build sector but the slowdown in the housing market has changed this and is benefiting self builders.
