CIH welcomes social housing review

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has welcomed a new review of social housing regulations that has also received strong support from the government.

The report, named Every Tenant Matter: a review of social housing regulation, and written by Martin Cave was launched at the CIH's annual conference, and attended by the secretary of state for communities and local government, Ruth Kelly.

According to CIH, the government has accepted the report's key measures and is expected to implement them in some form.

The review focuses mostly on regulation of existing social housing from the point of view of the residents, who will now be able to audit their landlord, choose their housing provider and have greater influence with existing regulators.

"Effective provision of affordable housing increasingly depends on strong partnerships and a culture of accountability and trust between those with an interest in that provision," said Sarah Web, deputy chief executive of CIH.

"The creation of an independent regulator will give a strong voice to all the key stakeholders in England's affordable housing provision, putting the views and interests of residents, government and providers on a more equal footing than now."
