Climate bill to have regular audits

In a move which may see changes to housing regulations, the government has announced that its climate change bill will include provisions for periodic independent reviews of the targets being set.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn announced that this element would be included in the bill in order to help Britain meet its target to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.

Describing the role of the independent committee, Mr Benn said: "Its review will give us a firm, credible basis for making a decision on whether the target should be changed".

Any changes could mean new targets for home energy efficiency, possibly with extra incentives for those building their own homes.

Yesterday property website propertyportal.com revealed that 70 per cent of householders would take additional action to make their homes more eco-friendly if given incentives to do so by the government.

In addition, 80 per cent argued for more help to get householders to install devices such as solar panels.
