Coastline could be affected by climate change

Properties in most easterly areas of England could be at risk of the effects of climate change if due consideration is not given to environmental projections, the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has suggested.

The institute has predicted that a quarter of all habitable land in the east could be uninhabitable by 2050 due to the preponderance of low lying areas and a susceptible coastline.

The report comes as the Environment Agency has revealed that 13 major developments went ahead in 2006/07 against its advice on flood risk.

"A temperature rise of two degrees could lead to rises in sea levels of as much as fivemetres, leaving many parts of the eastern region vulnerable to flooding," cautioned former chair of CIH Eastern Branch Colin Wiles.

"I think this should be informing many of our investment decisions, as the houses we build now could be under water by the end of the century," Mr Wiles warned.
