Communities helped with transformation

A new TV makeover show is aiming to help communities improve their surroundings by transforming noisy, congested neighbourhoods into safe, attractive places to live.

The makers of DIY Streets are looking for ten communities across the UK to take part in the pilot programme which will help residents to renovate their own land and build new and improved neighbourhoods.

Run by green transport charity Sustrans and backed by designer Wayne Hemmingway, the new show will look to create people-friendly neighbourhoods by building speed bumps and other traffic control measures and improving the general aesthetics of the area.

Peter Lipman, project director on DIY Streets, said: "Some of the most important aims of home zone design, such as controlling speeds, can be achieved very simply and at relatively little cost, so that community life in the street has a chance once again to flourish."

"Sustrans will provide in-depth training, resources and ongoing support to the ten communities. By working together we can build better neighbourhoods," he stressed.
