Concern raised over housing policy shift

A change in government policy towards the building of new homes in the north-west of England has caused concern among a body representing councils in the Manchester area.
The alteration in the north west regional spatial strategy has seen the emphasis move from a concentration on building in core city areas to a diversification which will see more building in towns across the region.
Responding to the news, the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities said: "Strong representations need to be made to these changes in particular, since they will potentially affect Greater Manchester's prospects for growth and development adversely."
Should the building of new homes in and around the main cities in the region be affected, those hoping to acquire a new home there may decide to seek the self build method of getting on the ladder, rather than choose from a smaller pool of new properties.
Existing policy has been seeking to regenerate parts of core city areas such as east Manchester, where the New East Manchester regeneration body has the declared aim of seeing 12,500 new homes constructed.
