Concerns raised over flood risk to homes

A poll has shown that most of the British public believe insufficient action is being taken to protect homes from repeats of the flooding that struck large areas of England last year.

The study by the Association of British Insurers found that three-quarters of respondents believe the flood risk is getting worse, a figure that rises to eight out of ten in areas affected last year.

Findings of the survey include 98 per cent stating that better drainage is the top priority for preventing floods, while nine out of ten believe homes should only be constructed in flood risk areas if there are sufficiently robust flood defences.

Those wanting to avoid living in a flood risk area seek out a plot to build their own home on that is safely located away from flood-risk areas.

Over 4,700 people are living in caravans, temporary accommodation or the top floors of their homes a year after the floods, the Shropshire Star reports.
