Conserve energy, don''t generate it

Conserve energy, don

It is better to spend money on heat retention rather than on machines to generate your own energy, according to experts.

For the moment it is still more feasible and cost-effective to concentrate your green efforts on conserving what energy you have already got in you home, rather than on paying out for home heat generation systems.

"One thing we would recommend people to do would be to insulate their home as well as they can before they start sticking on wind turbines," said Richard Diment from the Federation of Master Builders.

"Insulation reduces the amount of heat used and therefore reduces your carbon footprint."

If you are doing a loft conversion then you have an ideal time to add insulation or double glazing.

New research shows that a loft conversion can add up to about £15,000 to the value of your home because it provides the extra privacy and space which a third storey has over a two-storey house.
