Construction firms eager to sign up for Carbon Challenge

Building firms from across the UK and Europe are lining up to help create one of the UK's first eco-villages, it has been suggested.

The 150-home development in Peterborough, thought to be the second of five such schemes, will see an estimated 100 firms bid for the various contracts associated with the project, scheme officials have advised.

Similar numbers are expected for a Bristol development. In total the schemes aim to provide up to 100,000 zero carbon households throughout England.

"Building firms want to show they are leading the way in terms of design and energy efficiency. We've only just starting the tendering process for this site, but we've already had loads of e-mails from different companies wanting to get involved," advised Carbon Challenge project manager Jayne Lomas, according to Green Building Press.

"The purpose of the challenge is to show that the new technologies work and that they can be used in an affordable way. We want to see more affordable homes. It's no good if only the rich can afford to be zero-carbon," added housing minister Yvette Cooper.

The government currently plans to build around 190,000 new homes a year in an effort to combat falling supply levels.
