Council acknowledges affordable home shortage

A district council in County Durham has pledge to give a higher priority to affordable housing after seeing prices rise by 63 per cent over a six year period.

Homes in the district of Easington rose from £42,802 to £118,000 between 2001 and 2007, the Peterlee Mail reports.

As a result, the council has included "providing new high-quality housing that includes affordable housing for sale and rent" in its housing plan for the next three years.

Those in the area who are priced out may decide that instead of waiting for the new homes to arrive, they could seek to self build their own home instead.

Figures from the Land Registry for March showed that house prices in the north-east rose by 2.4 per cent last month.

The figures also showed that Easington prices are above those of the county average, which is £116,561.
