Council joins in self build project

Swindon borough council has joined in a project with Buildstore which has seen it release land for the specific purpose of allowing people to self build their own homes.

The plan will see the council find the land, which will then see a series of individuals specify their own requirements for their homes, using assistance from experts at Buildstore's National Self Build and Renovation Centre, which is based in the Wiltshire town.

Manager of the centre Tim Doherty noted that while there had been joint self build schemes before, this was the first to involve a partnership with a local authority.

He said: "It shows a real commitment to providing affordable housing solutions in the Swindon area and hopefully its success will inspire other local authorities to consider similar schemes."

Other recent examples of a group getting together to self build a series of homes include one in Witherslack in the Lake District, where four families will each be self building a two-storey house.
