Council tax revaluations ''long overdue''

Council tax revaluations

Council tax bands are expected to be readjusted soon after a new inquiry into the current system is released on March 21st.

The bands have not been examined for over 15 years and Sir Michael Lyons''s inquiry into them has been called "well overdue" by the Taxpayers'' Alliance which campaigns for lower taxes.

Blair Gibbs, a spokesperson for the organisation, said that there is no guarantee that the government will accept the report but if it does initiate re-valuing every property in England then this will be a welcome move.

He added: "The system will stay based on property value divided into bands.

"However it is very likely that there will be an increase in the number of bands, with higher bands paying more."

This in part is due to the need to incorporate the surge in £1 million houses into the band system although critics claim that this will lead to larger and more expensive homes being used to subsidise less well-off groups such as pensioners.
