Councils preparing brownfield sites for eco-town bids

Councils around the UK are searching for brownfield sites to use as locations for the government's proposed eco-town scheme, it has been revealed.
Councillors in Manchester and Birmingham have already selected potential areas for redevelopment, Building.co.uk has advised. A former petrochemical area in south Trafford and the former MG Rover car plant in Longbridge are among the sites being considered, the website has advised.
The government announced at last week's Labour Party conference that it was doubling the number of eco-towns proposed from five to ten following increased interest.
Birmingham council member John Lines told the website that plans were now well on the way to fruition.
"We are not only talking about it, we're mapping it out and working with developers," Mr Lines revealed.
However, last week the Home Builders Federation's director of external affairs, John Slaughter, noted that the eco-towns proposals were still "at a very, very early stage".
