Cut construction costs with recycled materials

The demand for construction materials with high recycled content is growing, according to one construction consultancy firm.

Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), who help public and private organisations to be more efficient with materials, has found that many new building projects are setting minimum requirements for recycled content.

The amount being sent to landfill as waste is also slowly declining as the importance of sustainable procurement comes to the fore.

Dr David Moon, programme manager for Wrap, said: "Case studies show that contractors can meet requirements without increasing the costs of materials or increasing risks."

He added that a more informed approach to materials purchasing can vastly increase the amount of recycled products on a building site.

Yorkshire Forward, a regional development agency, has set a ten per cent minimum requirement for recycled products on projects it funds.
