Delayed bill 'could impact on garden space'

Delayed bill

The postponement of the Land Use Bill could see over 200 acres of garden space being eradicated between now and the time when the bill is eventually given a second reading in the House of Commons, it has been claimed.

Industry organisation Garden Organic has said that postponing the second reading from last month until October could have a significant effect on gardens up and down the country.

The bill intends to redefine the meaning of the term brownfield land so that it does not encompass gardens, which can currently be claimed by developers in certain cases.

"The postponement of the Bill is of great disappointment to everyone involved in the Save Our Gardens campaign, as well as residents up and down the country," advised Garden Organic chief executive Dr Susan Kay-Williams.

Last month research from ESure found that one in ten property owners is set to spend at least £500 on improvements to their garden over the course of the next few months, despite the inclement weather currently being experienced by most of the country.
