Development in London could address climate change

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) has called for an increase in investment in London to increase its environmental standards.

Specifically, TCPA wants alterations in the London Plan for development of the city, with its director of policy and projects Robert Shaw arguing this is a unique opportunity for the city to address the issues of climate change by making its new developments energy efficient.

But Mr Shaw said that standards are "too low at present" and environmental issues might be forgotten altogether in the new developments of the city.

Greater co-operation amongst boroughs and clear guidelines on sustainable energy and energy efficiency were necessary, he further argued.

Communities had to be shown why they would benefit from environmentally friendly guidelines:

"Development is currently seen as something to be opposed and railed against. The TCPA believes that everyone is entitled to decent homes in sustainable communities and that communities must be at the heart of the planning process," concluded Mr Shaw.
